Backus Gas Fireplace manufactured in 1888!

After installation at Rowley House Museum
This is a Backus Vent-Free Gas Fireplace. Manufactured in 1888... WOW! We removed it form an old victorian home in Mechanicsburg a few years ago. We donated and installed it at the Rowley House Museum in Williamsport, PA. The amazing part of the story is that the Rowley house was built and lived in by Edwin A. Rowley in 1888 (the same year the fireplace was manufactured). Mr. Rowley happens to be none other than the CEO of the Backus Manufacturing Company which manufactured the fireplace! Even though the unit is over 120 years old, it still worked and burned perfectly when we tested it. They don't make them like that anymore!
